relationship between visceral adiposity and plasma adiponectin concentration: effect of weight loss
نویسندگان
چکیده
background : adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory and antiatherogenic protein that has a protective effect against atherosclerosis and diabetes. it is exclusively secreted by adipose tissue. serum adiponectin levels are inversely associated with parameters of overall adiposity including body mass index (bmi), fat mass, and percentage of body fat. methods : in a cross-sectional study of 76 women we sought to evaluate if adiponectin is associated primarily with central adiposity rather than overall adiposity. we also assessed adiponectin changes after weight loss in a subgroup of 42 obese subjects. results : waist to hip ratio (whr), an index of central obesity, was the only variable independently associated to adiponectin (beta= 0.25, p < 0.05). a mean increase of 8.2±24.2% in adiponectin concentration was observed in response to the dietary restriction and weight loss ( p = 0.03). our findings provide evidence for association of serum adiponectin level with visceral fat, represented by waist to hip ratio index. conclusion : moderate weight loss result in significant improvements in adiponectin concentration and provide another biological explanation for the beneficial effect of body weight loss on reducing cardiovascular and diabetes risks in obese patients.

Adiponectin, a 30-kDa adipokine hormone, circulates as heavy, medium, and light molecular weight isoforms in mammals. Plasma heavy molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin isoform levels are inversely correlated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in humans. The objectives of the present study were to characterize adiponectin protein and quantify plasma adiponectin levels in chickens, which are nat...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Maternal Plasma Leptin and Adiponectin Concentrations and Newborn Adiposity
Increased maternal blood concentrations of leptin and decreased adiponectin levels, which are common disturbances in obesity, may be involved in offspring adiposity by programming fetal adipose tissue development. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between maternal leptin and adiponectin concentrations and newborn adiposity. This was a cross-sectional study involving 210 healt...

Background and objectives: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of a progressive resistance-training program beside an energy deficit diet on body Composition, insulin resistance and plasma adiponectin levels in overweight adult men. Methods: Twenty-five overweight men (age =32.1 ± 4.3 years, BMI =28.9 ± 1.3 kg.m-2) were randomly assigned into one of the two groups: resis...
متن کاملAssociation of Anthropometric and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Measures of Adiposity with High Molecular Weight Adiponectin Concentration
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between adiposity measures and plasma concentration of high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin. METHODS In a Chinese sample (n = 1081), we performed measurements of anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). We defined overweight and obesity as a body mass index between 24 and 27.4 kg/m² and ≥ 27.5 kg/m², respectively, and central obesi...

OBJECTIVE Adiponectin is an adipose tissue protein that enhances insulin sensitivity and has antiatherogenic properties. The present study investigated the relationship of adiponectin levels in adolescents to 1) obesity and body fat distribution and 2) insulin sensitivity and the components of syndrome X. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Twenty-three normal-weight and 26 obese adolescents had fast...
